Nice guy makes most of his shot

New York Mets' Carlos Delgado right is congratulated by teammate David Wright after hitting a solo home run during the fifth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 2 of baseball's National League Championship Series Friday Oct. 13 2006 at Shea Stadium in New York. WP: For many years one of baseball's most admired gentlemen — friendly mature Carlos Delgado — has deserved a postseason stage as much as any player in the game. The public has no trouble delineating the stereotype of a ball-playing jerk with a fat contract and no conscience. We have a harder time imagining the opposite a quiet good-humored team leader who has waited his turn for a title shot. But such players exist with Delgado as a prime example. Now after 407 regular season home runs but not a single playoff game until this month one of the sport's finest role models has his chance in the spotlight at last.
